Ok, let's start learning Illustrator. There is not much searching needed for the beginner guidelines. The video below shows the basic tools, and teaches you to make a perfect yin/yang.
Notes:1)You need to have your items selected before you can merge them, or to use the shape builder tool. It took me some time time to realize why it wasn't working!
2)In CS5, I couldn't trace a placed image without background. Its erased background became all white. I hope to solve this later, as it can make some very cool brushes.
3)Useful zoom in-zoom out shortcut, also used in Photoshop: [Ctrl + +] and [Ctrl - -] (actually,Ctrl == instead of Ctrl++ as you don't use a shift)
4)Some features don't exist in older versions...so if you can't find something, you'll need to google it sometimes.
If you've got the basics, there's a cool next step:
And here's my first go at Illustrator tools, after watching the above tutorials. Maybe watermarking it is a bit too much, but I want to start remembering to sign what I make.
Moving on to how we ink and color sketches. At last, an alternative to Photoshop's pen tool! (I could never use it for inking, the lines don't "flow" at all the way I want) In Illustrator you get to draw awesome lines with a brush, easy and fast, AND you can erase with precision all the extra inking. I already love it. I love the video below even more for teaching me this.
I also discovered that there is an awesome shade palette, when you click at the color guide (right of the screen in Illustrator CS5. There are also the "swatches" in Photoshop, of course). I combined this with the above video, and made a sketch of myself.
